My Aunties

Why I got to thinking about my aunts, I have no idea, but they were most interesting women.

I'll begin with my great-aunt Flossie. She had her own ice-cream shop when she was still a teen, a most prosperous place. She met and fell in love with her husband and became a rancher's wife. I don't remember a whole lot about their ranch, though I think they raised sheep. She was a great cook. (Flossie is one of the characters in my historical family saga, Trail to Glory.

My mom's sister was also named Flossie. What a fun auntie. She always helped me with art projects for school and came up with great and unusual ideas. She was a teacher, mainly music. She could really play the piano, mostly church songs. Well into her late 80s she was still playing the piano for her church. I heard stories that she was a bit on the wild side as a young woman with many beaus. Her marriage failed, though she had one daughter, and in her senior years, she and her husband reunited. She loved the colors turquoise and purple and decorated her last house with both. But when it came to clothes, purple was her choice. when I think of my Aunt Flossie, elegant is the word that comes to mind.

My father's sister, Aunt Florence, was also artistic. She could paint and did wonderful ceramics. She raised four boys, the eldest had cerebral palsy. I loved going to her house. Despite many challenges, she always seemed happy. She thought up lots of great projects to keep us busy. She loved camping with her boys and I had the privilege of going with  them several times. Our family spent a lot of time with hers. She made the best homemade ice cream. Multi-talented,  she made me two different formal gowns when I was in high school. No patterns, I merely showed her photos from magazines of what I wanted, and she made the dresses.

One of my dad's brothers wives, Aunt Pearl, lived with my uncles and their three kids only one block away from us in Los Angeles. Pearl could also play the piano and did so for our youth group at the church. Her eldest daughter, Barbara, was 11 months younger than me, and needles to say, we were best friends.

Another of my dad's brothers wife, Aunt Ruth, I don't really remember a lot about except she was beautiful and became very ill and passed away at a young age.

These wonderful women had a great influence on my life, and I have great memories of each of them.

It's fun to remember.
