Along Came the Internet (#5)

I signed up immediately with the first local Internet serve in the community.

At that time it was mainly e-mail and a flurry of interesting places to visit. One I remember was a view of  bad traffic place. Yes, I watched that a lot.

To learn more about how to use the Internet, I took a day long class. It was mostly a waste of time for me as I already knew most of what they taught us.

By this time, I had my first Rocky Bluff P.D. mystery, Final Respects, written and was looking for a publisher. Back to the latest copy of Writers Digest Market book. Lo and behold, I found a publisher looking for police procedurals. (I'd decided to use the name F.M. Meredith as the author.)

I submitted the book. This time, thanks to computers and WordPerfect, I didn't have to make copies using carbon paper, but I still had to send it via postal mail. There was no such thing as attachments to email at the time.

Exciting news--the book was accepted. However, the contract said it would only be printed as an electronic book. What that meant was it would be posted for people to buy and then read on their computer. Well, what the heck, I was always ready to try new things.

Finally, it was "published" and ready for people to purchase. I tried it--far too complicated. I knew this was going to be a failure.

Eventually, the whole idea of e-publishing flourished, though not at first.

Final Respects was picked up by an E-publisher who did the nest 2 books, but it wasn't an above board operation, never received any royalties until I complained, and learned the publisher hadn't kept track of the earnings. Found another publisher who redid those books and another, and decided she didn't want to be a publisher anymore. Next, the books were redone by Oak Tree Publishing, and was a good relationship until the publisher got ill and passed away. Now the series is being published for Kindle and paper by Aackenback and Kent.

Thonie, looking back has been fun and when I really think about it, despite all the hurdlers, I'm glad I stuck it out!
