PSWA CONFERENCE, FEATURED SPEAKER #1--INSURANCE CRIMES

Rich Wicliffe explained how dangerous and expensive these crimes are--and how they ultimately cost us.

International insurance fraud costs are over $100 billion a year. These frauds include staged losses, money laundering, human trafficing, jewelry hesits, falsified injury and death clains, arson for profit.

People report cars stolen by people who can't make car payments. Cars are dumped in canals or other bodies of water. Staged accidents, and illegal exports--cars stolen and taken out of the country.

Nicer cars are targeted, rear-ended, Late at night, remote location, older cars on either side, and smash into the car. Everyone in the other two cars are "injured" and go to docs in on the insurance fraud. In California, illegal immigrants are used for drivers and passengers

Illegal Exports. Authorities will check out on the manifst what's supposed to be inside the container/ sometimes it's n expensive new car, not what's supposed to be there.

Staged thefts and burlaries by homeowners, businesses and customers. No sign of forced entry. Selling what no one wants anymore, receipts created on the merchants' own website.

Art fraud on cruise ships: The one selling the are was the appraiser using high tech prints.

Switcheroos, replica watches, but says the expensive one was stolen. "Authentic" fake receipt.

Arson for profit. Want a free kitchen? Stage a fire in your old kitchen. Person "forgot" they left something cooking--someone had a fire extinguisher and put out the first, Insured got a whole new kitchen.

Repairs--watch out for those who say they'll repair you driveway for a cheap price.

B-girls, customer drugged and robbed of money, jewelry and credit cars.

Boat theft and human smuggling. Boat owner reports boat stolen used for human and drug smuggling. There isn't enough marine law enforcement. In a high speed chase, the humans are thrown overboard.

There was lots more--great presentation. Rich Wickliffe has three books:

Eyes of Possesion, Typical Windfall, Steam Crasher

Please excuse any mistakes I may have made--I took this from the notes I wrote.
