Motivation to Write

What motivates you to get writing?

To be honest, I don't need any, unless you call my cup of Chai latte one. I always start my writing day with a cup of Chai--but even if I didn't have one, I'd write.

It certainly isn't all the money I'm going to make that motivates me--I haven't made enough in all the years that I've written and been published to keep me writing.

So what is it? What makes me sit down at the computer and begin writing?

Having goals and being able to accomplish those goals has always motivated me, no matter what those goals might be. I think that writing two series books a year is what has kept me moving along.

I just sent my latest Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery, Spirit Shapes, off to the publisher. Does that mean I'm through with it? Absolutely not. I'll soon have to write a short blurb or what they call an elevator pitch and a longer description of the book for the back cover.

In the meantime, I've got six chapters of the next Rocky Bluff P.D. crime novel written. I have notes about where I want the story to go and I know how it's going to end--I just have to sit down and write about it. I have to do what I always tell others: Vomit out the whole thing and then clean it up afterwards.

Right now, I need to get busy with that. I'm writing about a rapist and his victims, the officers of the Rocky Bluff P.D. and how they are dealing with their new female police chief, Gordon Butler's move to the graveyard shift and how it's affecting his budding roman with Lizette Gibbs, the murder of an old man, a new baby with Down Syndrome, and so much more. I love finding out what's going on with the law enforcement officers of Rocky Bluff and their families. The only way I can do that is to write it.

And yes, that's my motivation.

So tell me your motivations--or what kick-starts you to actually sit down and write?

Loved your blog, as usual Marilyn. As a non-fiction writer, deadlines motivate me most. Trying to cross over into fiction, I haven't found the same kind of motivation to put butt in chair. Any advice?
Michelle, I see my mysteries as movies and try to convey what I see. Each time I sit down to write I'm axioms to find out what happens next.

I admire you and your motivation so much. I know what you mean about sitting down to see what's happening to your story characters. But still, since leaving my manuscript for so long a time, I don't make myself SIT!
