PSWA Conference: Publisher Oak Tree Press

She will be in attendance again to tell you what she is looking for in a manuscript. She'll be on a panel with two other small press publishers.

Billie Johnson has a B.S., Business and spent more than twenty years in Corporate America. Since its launch in 1998, Oak Tree Press has released more than 50 titles, mostly mysteries but also in the romance genre, self-help and a high-concept picture book. Twelve titles are scheduled for 2009, and we are shooting for twenty in 2010.

OTP books meet all standards of the industry with professionally-designed covers (our designer’s day job is on Madison Avenue in NYC!) and handsome interiors. Our retailer’s discount meets industry norms, and our books are fully returnable. OTP sponsors three annual writing contests—Dark Oak for mysteries, CopTales for true-to-life law enforcement stories and Timeless Love for romance, and the top prize is a publishing contract. Always on the look-out for new ways to support OTP authors, Johnson launched three client-centric features in the summer of 2008. A company blog, www.otpblog.blogspot.com gives authors and friends of the company a spot to share triumphs, trials, tips and techniques with colleagues. July 2008 saw the premier issue of COLOPHON, our in-house newsletter filled with insider information on the book business and a crash course in book marketing. At this same time, OTP made the decision to step into Amazon’s Kindle program.

This is definitely a publisher I would like to meet someday. I've represented some of their books and I've never been disappointed by them.

A chance at a one-on-one is very nice to have. We had that at the WriteAngles Conference I attended in November, along with an agent panel that dissected a random selection of submissions. Very informative and interesting.

One of my friends got a chance to pitch to an agent and this agent requested the first three chapters. We're still waiting to hear back, but that alone was worth the cost of the conference.

I'm a huge fan of The Pot Thief series by J. Michael Orenduff, which is put out by Oak Tree Press. Excellent writing, good-looking book.

Like I do with many folks, I met Morgen through the Internet when I learned about the great interviews she does. I thought it would be fun to turn the tables on Morgen and find out something things about her, so here goes: Morgen, except for the fact that you do terrific interviews I know very little about you. Today is My Birthday!

I never thought I'd live this long! The last few years, birthday celebrations have usually been a nice dinner out in a restaurant. Hard to do these days. Sometimes cake and ice cream is how we celebrate. This year my granddaughter, Melissa, is doing something special. She's taking her grandpa and me to a place about 1 1/2 hours away for lunch, called The Secret Garden. I've not only never been there, but I've never heard of it. I took a peek on the Internet and it looks like a beautiful place to celebrate most anything. Yes, I'm excited. I'll take pictures and report on it when I get back. Melissa is special.
