Weird Dreams about Delevan Drive Grammar School

Delevan Drive as it looks now

I went to a grammar school in Los Angeles (in a bit of it that bordered on Glendale and was on the edge of Eagle Rock. The school itself was a 2 story brick structure that looked on the outside like Mt. Vernon. It sat on a large corner lot with many eucalyptus trees and playground area.

Inside, it had a staircase on either end with mid-way landings, and restrooms in the basement.

I didn't attend kindergarten there as the first five years of my life I lived in South Pasadena. I don't remember much about that school at all, except playing outside with huge blocks, and my teacher was Miss Fairy.

Delevan went through the sixth grade only, and the last half of the 6th grade I had rheumatic fever and had to stay home. My teacher, Mrs. Brown, brought me my arithmetic papers to do--the only subject I had a problem with.

And I walked to school and back every day, about three long blocks.

Back to the school and my dreams--quite often I dream about being there as an adult. Sometimes the school has turned into a college and I'm attending classes there, often having trouble finding the rigth room.

A few nights ago I dreamed my sister and I were there and someone stole her camera and we were going after them.

In the most recent dream, the school had become an airport and a good friend of mine was supposed to get on a plane but had left her screw driver some where and went back to get it. The plane was about to take off--but I woke up so don't know if she made it.

The school was torn down because it didn't meet earthquake codes. It is now much more modern, I've only seen photos of it.

I never dream about my junior high, Washington Irving, nor Eagle Rock High School.

But, the old Delevan Drive lives on in my dream world.

This is the front of the old school, however, I usually saw the back because that's how I entered, though the two doors in back, so did most of the kids who lived on that side of the school. You can see the cupola up there that they saved and put on the news school.

The school garden. We had one too, it was a Victory Garden.
