Scary Things 1

The first really scary thing that happened in my life was when I was 10 years old.

In my growing up years, kids could pretty much go off and do whatever they wanted as long as they were home by dinner. I'm sure bad things happened to kids back then, as they do now, but parents were really busy--dad's worked and mom's didn't have all the wonderful appliances we do now. And they expected us to use our heads and stay out of trouble.

One day I came home at dinner time and no one was home. Lights were on, and the front door unlocked. The car was gone. Neither my mom, dad nor my 5 year old sister were there. Steaks were cooking in the broiler. 

And...there was blood on the floor and in the sink! 

I ran outside and up the hill to a neighbor whose husband was a police officer, and told her what was happening.

She ran with me back to the house and immediately turned off the oven. She took one look around and decided someone had been murdered. Imagine how I felt.

She took me to her house. 

As far as I know, she didn't call the police--though she might have called her husband, but I don't remember.

I know I stayed with her until well into the night.

Finally, my mom and dad came home without my little sister.

This is what happened. That afternoon, my sister decided to mow the lawn with our push mower. It got away from her and she tried to stop it and got her little finger caught in the blades. It was cut nearly off, hanging there by skin.

They brought her in the house to stop the bleeding, hence the blood on the floor and sink, wrapped her whole hand in a towel, and headed for the ER. Because it was during WWII, there was no surgeon at the first hospital. The ER doc wanted to just finish cutting her finger off.

My folks wouldn't have it and went to another hospital, and another, until they found a doc willing to sew the finger back on. Which was done. It healed, and though she can't bend it, it was her left hand, pinkie finger and to this day has no problem using it.

Yep, that was scary!
