Scary Things #3

This one happened while I was babysitting two little boys. I was probably around 12 at the time. I babysat for them often though I didn't like to at all.  They lived on the next street down from us and I got to and from on my own, no matter how late.  But the main reason I didn't like to go there was because of the room I had to be in as per the parents' instructions.

The so-called family room wasn't a happy place to be, though it was the only room with a TV--black and white in those days.

It had a built-in bed/sofa that was the only place to sit. Hanging above it was a collection of shrunken heads--yes, real shrunken heads. Where they got them I have no idea, but the father was extremely proud of them.

On this particular night, after making sure the boys were sound asleep, I retreated to the room and watched TV. I must've dozed off. When I woke, I checked on the boys again and they were gone! The beds empty.

Panicked, I called home and told my mom. She said to call the police.

Just as I was ready to do that, the front door opened, I ran to see who it was. Oh, my goodness, it was the boy's uncle with the two boys. He'd come in, didn't bother to wake me, and taken them out for a treat. I was happy and mad at the same time. He apologized, but that didn't help.

When the parents came home, I told them what happened, and they promised it would never happen again.

This was back when the going rate for babysitting was  50 cents and hour. And this family did not pay a penny more.

This, unfortunately, even after all these years, is still a most vivid memory. I can still see those yukky shrunken heads.

What an appropriate story for this month with Halloween right around the corner. I wrote a short story about shrunken heads called "The Golden Bug" and it detailed how that process worked. That whole family sounds like they would have fit right in with the holiday and the Adams Family.

Eww. Both the heads and the disappearing children sound totally scary. The worst I had when babysitting was the child who hung to my jeans until I was forced to just drag him around. Did I mention I wasn't a great babysitter?
YUK! I'd never forget that either.
I had a lot of weird experiences while babysitting. Started the job when I was 10 and totally unfit to be doing it.
